It was also Davidson's 10^th win of the season and his 10^th win overall at the 3/8-mile PIR oval. His chief rival, Mark Moore - who has nine wins at PIR and leads Davidson 23-18 in overall career victories - finished second, but every driver's primary opponent was the track.

Shaking Moore's hand after the race, Davidson said, "I was looking for grip."

"There wasn't any grip that I could find," Moore answered.

Davidson drove his No. 16 maroon and white 1933 Plymouth sedan-bodied machine. Moore was in his No. 33 orange and silver 1933 Chevy coupe.

Pat Halvorson was third in a 1941 Ford, James Scott fourth in a 1936 Chevy and Kenny Brannon fifth in a 1937 Pontiac.

Moore recovered from a spinout on lap 5 that brought out the second of four caution flags, and Scott recovered from a loop  on the same corner on lap 6, salvaging top-4 finishes.

Attrition was high, with only six cars running at the finish of the 10-lap race. Chad Fritsche, a two-time winner this season, was running second with four laps to go when a malfunction caused him to believe his engine was losing oil pressure and he pulled off the track. The engine turned out to be fine, after all, but it relegated Fritsche to a seventh-place finish.

Two more cars - driven by Luke Rutter and Charlie Jett, in place of regular driver Dennis English - were eliminated by tire problems and Brandon Fritsche, Chad Fritsche's younger brother, was sidelined by a coolant leak.

Halvorson and Davidson were the heat race winners, on a track that was already showing its dry-slick characteristics early in the program.

It was the 23^rd victory for Moore, the KVRA founder and president, his fifth of the year and his fourth in the last six races.

James Scott was chasing Moore when the white flag waved, but his No. 3 1936 Chevrolet blew its engine at the beginning of the final lap. Lynn Wilson passed Scott's slowing car to take second for the second straight race. Richard Cook, Steve Alexander and Pat Halvorson rounded out the top five.

Alexander and Moore were heat race winners.

Chad Fritsche, a two-time winner this season who finished second to Moore in the series' most recent visit to Camden on July 17, was sidelined by engine problems during warm-ups.

It was the second win a row for Moore, who won a tightly contested duel with Craig Howard to win Aug. 8 at Duck River Speedway in Wheel, Tenn. That means Moore will have to start at the rear of the field in his next KVRA feature start.

The next event on the schedule is Friday at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway. KVRA returns to Camden on Sept. 11.

It was a reversal of fortune for Moore, on two counts. He finished second to Howard's father, Ozzie, in last year's KVRA visit to Duck River, and he came up short in a battle against Dave Davidson in the first feature of this two-race weekend Friday night at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway.

Howard, of Shelbyville, Tenn., started on the pole, but it was Moore, from the outside front-row starting spot, who roared into an early lead. Howard chased him until Moore came upon the lapped car of Bobby Varnon on the backstretch of the fifth lap.

The two leaders sandwiched Varnon as they roared into Turn 3, with Howard emerging in front. He held command for nine laps, but Moore, who had pulled alongside him on the inside coming off Turn 2 of the 12^th lap, completed the pass with a similar move the next time around. Moore pulled away over the final three circuits, finishing about five car lengths ahead of Wilson.

"Whenever we had that caution (on lap 9, for Jason Bailey's spin coming out of Turn 2), I figured I'd have enough time left to do something," Moore said. "My car was getting good bite, and he (Howard) was going into the turns a lot harder. I think he was pressing a little bit."

The victory was the fourth of the season for Moore, of Murray, Ky., and his 1933 Chevy coupe No. 33.

Alexander and Howard were heat race winners, both leading their eight-lap preliminaries from start to finish. Moore's ill-handling car slipped from second to fourth, but he nursed the car back to a second-place finish to earn the outside front-row starting spot. The chassis adjustments he made after the heat gave him a car capable of winning.

Moore remarked about last year's visit to Duck River, when he and Howard's father, Ozzie, raced for the victory. Moore ended up second by a nose.

"Last year, we ended up side by side coming off the last turn," he said. "I thought that maybe that was going to happen again."

In the series' appearance at the 3/8-mile high-banked oval on July 24, Moore had out-dueled Davidson to get his first win of the season at PIR and break a tie for most wins at the Paducah track. Davidson's victory Friday pulled him even with Moore, each with nine wins.

It was also Davidson's ninth victory of this season, and it was his hardest-fought win. Moore was able to pull alongside on several occasions.

 "That was fun," Davidson said. "He (Moore) kept the pressure on. I saw his front tires a couple of times."

Moore spun out on the final turn and ended up fifth. Weaver Motorsports teammates Rex Rutter and Brian Steele were second and third, with Luke Rutter fourth.

"We were coming up on a lapped car, and I thought I might have a chance to get by him," Moore said. "I went in too hard. I chased it and chased it, but couldn't catch it."

Moore recovered and cruised on to the finish line, narrowly edging a charging Chad Fritsche at the flag.

Luke Rutter won the first heat and Davidson took the second heat.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Brian Steele found a tacky surface to his liking, and rode it to a flag-to-flag victory in Saturday night's Kentucky Vintage Racing Association feature at Clarksville Speedway.

It was the second career victory for Steele, both of the wins coming this year at the ¼-mile Clarksville oval.

"They've got a heck of a track," Steele said after posing for victory photos outside Turn 1. "The old car was working good."

"I just got lucky and got a jump at the start," Steele said. "There was a little bit of black in the middle of the track and you could get a good bite."

Good enough that Steele was turning laps in the 14-second bracket, close to the speeds of the super late model cars, and packing the left front wheel most of the way down the straightaways on the Weaver Motorsports 1947 Plymouth No. W4. Steele credited chassis specialist Tony Russell for the set-up.

His teammate, Rex Rutter, chased Steele and Fritsche for four laps before cutting down the right rear tire on his 1947 Chevy No. W3. Rutter, who had a similar problem in the second heat race, ended up 12^th.

Steele picked up his first victory on April 25 in the second of five visits to the north central Tennessee track. Saturday night's victory makes him the fourth driver to score multiple victories this season, along with Dave Davidson (eight wins), Moore (three) and Fritsche (two). Davidson did not compete Saturday night.

The 12-lap main event was the first feature after the intermission, during which the vintage sedans and coupes were lined up along the front straightaway and fans were invited out of the grandstands for a closer look at the cars.

Not long after the race ended, rain began to fall, eventually wiping out several races remaining on the program.
