PADUCAH -- Paducah International Raceway, which was slated to be the site of four straight Friday nights of racing for Kentucky Vintage Racing Association, announced Thursday that it has canceled races on Aug. 31 and Sept. 7, 14 and 21 and will conclude the year's racing with its season championship event on Sept. 28.

The reason for the cancelation is that the pond on the southern end of the track property, which provides the water for irrigating the track before each week's racing program, has suffered from the drought and extremely hot temperatures and, according to track officials, is nearly dry.

The matter is in all likelihood moot for this weekend, with forecasts of up to 84 percent chance of rain and storms as the remnant of Hurricane Isaac makes its way toward the heartland after making landfall Wednesday on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana and Mississippi. Several high school football games have been moved up from Friday night to Thursday night because of concerns about imclement weather on Friday.

But the decision leaves KVRA competitors hanging. As of now, KVRA president Mark Moore said the vintage cars will run at Paducah on Sept. 28. Moore said he has also scheduled a race on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Western Kentucky Speedway in Nebo. Other late additions to the schedule are being discussed with other track operators.

Management of PIR arranged to have the vintage cars race on the four canceled dates less than two weeks ago when the track made an adjustment in the schedule it had posted at the beginning of the season, which called for an open date on Sept. 21 and the season finale on Sept. 28. The open date was to avoid competition with Paducah's Barbecue on the River festival, but the festival is going to be Sept. 28, not Sept. 21. The original plan called for KVRA to compete this week and Sept. 14.

The schedule announced two weeks ago moved the season finale to Sept. 21.

PADUCAH, Ky. - Dave Davidson, who emerged victories in a frantic second heat race, jumped into the lead at the outset, then rode the lead to victory in the Kentucky Vintage Racing Association feature Friday night at Paducah International Raceway.

Runner-up Mark Moore came from the back of the eight-car field and was closing on Davidson at the checkered flag, but never got close enough to mount a challenge.

"I knew they were coming," Davidson said, remarking about the nearly perfect tacky surface of the 3/8-mile oval after an afternoon rain shower soaked into the dirt.

The Henderson, Ky., driver never put a wheel wrong after moving ahead of fellow front-row starter Dennis English, and took his second victory of the season in the1933 Plymouth sedan No. 16.

Moore was second in a 1934 Chevy coupe and his son, Matt, was third in a 1937 Chevy coupe. English's 1936 Ford sedan was fourth and Steve Alexander rounded out the top five in a 1932 Chevy coupe.

Alexander won the first heat, and then the second heat provided one of the most closely contested races on the night's program. English led the first two laps before Davidson took command, but he was unable to pull away.

English, Mark Moore and Matt Moore swapped positions furiously, with all the drivers battling for the inside line in the corners until near the end, when English went to the top and found traction and momentum that carried him from fourth to second on the final lap.

The summary:
FEATURE, 10 laps
1.
