Rutter back in the saddle at PIR tonight

Rex Rutter.jpgRex Rutter, idle since he was injured in an off-track incident in April, returns to the KVRA lineup tonight as the vintage coupes and sedans make an extra visit to the 3/8-mile high-banked Paducah International Raceway oval.

PIR is the series' unofficial home track, for tonight's race. It will be the sixth race of the season at PIR and the 21st in series history.

Rutter, of Madisonville, Ky., drives the Weaver Racing No. W3, a black 1947 Chevrolet coupe. Rutter is a three-time winner in KVRA competition, including a June 6, 2008, feature at PIR. His interim replacement, late model driver Josh Throgmorton of Providence, Ky., scored a win May 15 at Paducah.

That's the only race at Paducah this year that hasn't been won by Dave Davidson of Henderson, Ky., driver of the No. 16 maroon and white 1933 Plymouth sedan. Davidson has won four of five at PIR and seven of the 12 features contested this year. The last two have been consecutive KVRA victories, and under KVRA handicap rules, any driver who strings two feature wins must start at the back of the lineup in his next series start.

NOTES: Davidson's four PIR wins this year have pulled him to within one victory of tying KVRA founder and president Mark Moore, who has won eight times at Paducah. Moore, of Murray, Ky., drives the silver and orange No. 33 1934 Chevrolet coupe. He is the series' all-time winningest driver, but has only one feature win this season. He has won 20 features, compared to Davidson's 15. ...

Chad Fritsche was the fourth driver to score his first KVRA victory this year. He won the 50th race in KVRA's three-season history June 6 at Clarksville. Brian Steele, Josh Throgmorton and Jason Bailey are the other first-time winners this year. Fritsche drives the Moore Motorsports No. 40, a red 1940 Chevy coupe. ...

Moore's brother, Mike Moore, will be driving the Moore Motorsports No. 37, a 1937 Pontiac coupe, tonight. The Newburgh, Ind., driver has one Paducah victory, that coming in last year's season opener, when he was driving his own No. C7 1934 Ford sedan. That car was heavily damaged in a violent rollover accident at PIR on May 15 and was damaged again in a crash at Clarksville (Tenn.) Speedway June 6. ...

Palma, Ky.'s Dennis English is the other former PIR winner expected in tonight's field. English, who drives the No. 42 1936 Ford sedan, scored his lone KVRA career victory at Paducah Aug. 10, 2007 ...

Mark Davis of Mayfield, Ky., will drive in place of Pat Halvorson in the No. 61 black 1941 Ford coupe. It will be Davis' second KVRA start, as he subbed for Halvorson's teammate, Kenny Brannon, in the No. 88 1939 Pontiac earlier this year at PIR.
