Battle of KVRA titans goes to Moore

dave-mark.jpgPADUCAH, Ky. - Kentucky Vintage Racing Association's two most dominant drivers squared off in a contest worthy of their talents and resumes, with Mark Moore edging Dave Davidson in Friday night's 10-lap feature at Paducah International Raceway.

The two swapped the lead four times according to official lead changes recorded, but on several laps there were multiple exchanges of the front spot. Moore officially led the final five laps in his 1934 Chevrolet coupe, but Davidson was a constant challenger.

"I was going to protect the inside," said Moore after taking the checkered flag by one car length. "I was going to make him pass me on the outside."

Davidson actually managed to do that on two occasions and was scored as the leader on three laps, but was unable to keep his quick 1933 Plymouth sedan in the bottom groove.

"It was a little slicker up high," Davidson said. "When I could run down low, I could catch him a little."

The two drivers are the winningest in the brief history of KVRA, Moore with 22 and Davidson with 16. Davidson, though, won eight of the first 16 races this season while Moore struggling, winning only once until he finally got his second victory a week ago at Camden (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

Davidson took the lead from his outside front-row starting spot, but Moore shot underneath him off Turn 2 to gain the top spot on lap 2. They raced side by side with Moore taking a slight edge at the start-finish line completing lap 3 when the race was interrupted by its only caution flag, for Brian Steele's spinout in Turn 2.

On the restart, Davidson once again managed to wrest the lead away. He held off Moore's challenges for two laps, until Moore once again moved past coming off Turn 2 on the inside.

Davidson gave valiant chase, getting a final opportunity on the final lap when Moore lost momentum as he overtook the 10th-place car of James Scott. He went low while Davidson went high around Steele as they headed down the backstretch for the last time.

Moore, who felt his car worked better in Turns 1-2 than it did in Turns 3-4, managed to maintain his advantage and beat Davidson to the checkers for the first time this season.

Rex Rutter won a duel with Chad Fritsche to take third, and Kenny Brannon rounded out the top five finishers.

Pat Halvorson came back after a tangle with Richard Hall on the first start attempt and won the first heat. Moore nipped Davidson to win the second heat, holding off a final-lap charge by the challenger that served notice of what was to come in the feature.
