SUMMERTOWN, Tenn. -- KVRA drivers solicited donations from race fans during intermission Saturday night at Thunderhill Raceway to benefit injured driver Roger Brewer.

Brewer was seriously injured in an accident at car owner Tom Richardson's Athens shop April 14. Larry Bailey, another KVRA racer from Athens, Ala., organized the fundraiser and asked drivers to walk through the grandstands to collect donations in their helmets.

Later that evening, Bailey's son, Jason, won his first feature race.

Brewer, 54, from Tuscumbia, Ala., began competing in KVRA events in the series' inaugural season, 2007. The year before, he was track champion at Thunderhill.

He was hurt when a winch slipped out of gear, allowing the liftgate on Richardson's hauler to fall, as the two men attempted to unload the No. 261 1935 Plymouth sedan owned by Richardson. Brewer tried to get out of the way, but was hit by the gate.

He suffered a broken femur, broken ankle and crushed vertebrae, resulting in paralysis from the waist down. He is scheduled to be released soon from the Shepherd Center, a rehabilitation facility in Atlanta.

Brewer drove in the 2009 season opener at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway April 3. He finished second in a heat race, but slipped to 13th in the feature when the car began spewing steam.

He is a second-generation racer, and his son, Randy, competed in two KVRA events last year, winning a heat race at Checkered Flag Speedway in Hohenwald, Tenn., in Bailey's No. 89 1933 Chevrolet sedan.

Brewer has two other children, son Mark and daughter Olivia.
