Moore, the KVRA president and founder, had led from the pole in the 12-lap event but the brakes failed on his No. 33 on the final lap. His car veered upward as the two exited Turn 2 and made contact with Fritsche, who was attempting a pass on the outside.
The impact broke the right front suspension on
"That's not the way I wanted to win a race," Fritsche said. "I thought the two of us were going to have a great side by side battle for the checkered flag off the fourth turn."
Richard Hall, who spun to avoid
Fritsche started on the front row beside Moore, who won the second heat. He chased the leader relentlessly, keeping pace by running a high line with his 1940 Chevy coupe. He was able to challenge for the front position twice, pulling alongside the leader, but
"I lost the brakes on the last lap, going into Turn 1," said
Pat Halvorson, who won the first heat, finished fourth. Richard Cook rounded out the top five.
