The finish was recorded based on the 10th lap, with Dave Davidson second,
The event was the final race on a program that featured the Lucas Oil Series late models. Dale McDowell won the 50-lap feature, which was taped for delayed broadcast by SPEED TV.
Mike Moore was overtaking the lapped car of Larry Bailey when his No. C7 veered to the right and hit the concrete retaining wall. The car reared upward and began to flip, making several rolls before coming to rest on its wheels.
His was the third car of the evening to be involved in a rollover crash, all of them happening under similar circumstances on the front straightaway. One Crate Late Model and one Modified were seriously damaged in the other crashes.
In contrast, the Lucas Series touring pros ran their events with few caution flags. But the fast cars took a toll on the track, which before the end of the evening was as hard and as black as pavement and treacherously slick. The Crate cars required 30 minutes before they could complete three of their 15 laps, as the spinouts became too frequent to count.
The KVRA drivers showed much better respect for the slippery surface and completed the first 10 laps with only one spinout.
"I was trying to be careful," said first-time KVRA winner Throgmorton, of
Throgmorton took the lead from pole starter Mike Moore at the drop of the flag. Moore, who won the first heat by being patient and waiting for opportunities to work his way forward, tried the same strategy in the feature, dropping back into the pack as the early laps unfolded. The strategy was for naught when the crash took him out.
Brian Steele, Richard Hall, Joe Beard, Dennis English and Richard Cook rounded out the top 10.
Nineteen coupes, sedans and the 1948 Chevy pickup-bodied machine of Jim Segars were on hand for the sixth KVRA event of the season. Segars, of
Mike Moore was also racing for the first time in 2009. He is working on a coal mining operation in
Cook won the first heat, taking over when early leader Jamie Hilton bobbled coming off Turn 2 with two laps to go. Pat Halvorson took second and Hilton slipped to third.

Do you guys happen to know what the make and model the coupe was, that Wayne Coakley drove for Jessie Baize in the early 70's? Also, what chassis was typically used on those cars in the era? I would like to some day build a tribute car to Wayne, based on that car,and would like to know accurate information on this particular car. I saw Wayne win in that car at Windy Hollow in '73, my first dirt race and got a kiddie ride after the race.
Kevin -- we'll try to come up with that information for you. Thanks for writing. Let us know how that tribute car project goes. We'd love to help you showcase that!
