MURRAY, Ky. -- Two weeks after a successful season opener at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway on Aug. 3, Kentucky Vintage Racing Association continues the 2009 campaign with two races this weekend.
The vintage coupes and sedans visit Camden (Tenn.) Speedway on Friday night. The 3/8-mile dirt oval is under new management this year. John Slaton was in the process of purchasing the track when previous owner Norman Fowler died March 1.
Fowler, who also owned and operated the popular Birdsong Trail Ride in Camden, took over operation of the track in June 2006 and staged Friday night races the past two seasons. He suffered injuries that proved to be fatal in a fall from a horse the week before his death. He was 74.
KVRA competed at the Camden track five times in 2007 and 2008, with Mark Moore and Dave Davidson winning features in 2007 and Moore winning twice last year, with one feature rained out.
The vintage cars will be part of a full program including modifieds, street stocks and four-cylinder "hummers."
On Saturday night, the series moves to Clarksville (Tenn.) Speedway, a ΒΌ-mile track which was host to two KVRA events last year. Bryan Rupe and Rex Rutter were the feature winners.
WATCH US GROW: Two special events at Paducah were confirmed Wednesday. The series will be part of the program at the 3/8-mile PIR oval on Saturday night, May 2, with the Lucas Oil Series late models as the headline attraction.
It will be a two-race weekend at the same track, with KVRA part of the regular Friday night program May 1.
Also, a "NASCAR Night" special on Thursday night, July 30, already tentatively on the KVRA calendar was confirmed.
The two races bring the total of KVRA dates at Paducah this year to 15, and the season total to 37 events.
GET WELL, ROGER: KVRA driver Roger Brewer, seriously injured in an accident at car owner Tom Richardson's Athens, Ala., shop Tuesday morning, was reported to be in good spirits Wednesday. Brewer suffered a broken leg, broken ankle and crushed vertebrae when he was struck by the liftgate on the trailer that hauls the No. 261 racecar.
Brewer, 54, faces the prospect of being paralyzed from the waist down, but fellow Athens competitor Larry Bailey said Brewer claimed he had some feeling in his lower extremities. He was scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday evening.
"He told me, 'I want to get back in the race car,'" Bailey said. "I told him, 'We'll get you back in the race car, if we have to put handlebars on it!'"
HOT LAPS: Another KVRA regular is expected to make his season debut this weekend. Richard Hall of Murray, Ky., was unable to make the Aug. 3 opener in his No. 55, a 1947 Chevrolet sedan-bodied machine, but hopes to have the car ready to go this weekend...
Pat Halvorson of Paducah, Ky., is scheduled to roll out a new car this weekend, a 1941 Ford coupe. Halvorson split driving duties Aug. 3 at Paducah with partner Kenny Brannon, who will be the regular driver of Halvorson's No. 88 1939 Pontiac...
The winner at Paducah two weeks ago, Dave Davidson of Henderson, Ky., will not be able to compete Friday night at Camden, so the series will see a second feature winner in its first two races. Davidson will have a chance at his second victory of the year Saturday night at Clarksville.
